The Assumption of Mary is traditionally a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic Church. This significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God.
Because the date falls on a Saturday this year, it is not obligatory but still a holy day.
