My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
In the Gospel of St. John, we hear Jesus tell St. Peter to “feed my sheep” (John 21: 15–17). This is much more than an instruction to one of the Apostles. It is a call from the Lord to each of us to love and care for others, giving what we have received from God so that they, too, may know his abundant love.
Through the Catholic Services Appeal, more than one hundred services, programs, and ministries make Christ’s love for us present in the world. Your support for this work is also an act of evangelization, bringing the light of Christ to those who are searching and offering hope and healing to those who are suffering.
In this final year of our National Eucharistic Revival—the Year of Mission—each of us is called to go forth to share the joy of the Gospel and the power of Christ in the Eucharist. Through nurturing our brothers’ and sisters’ physical and spiritual needs, we follow in the footsteps of the Apostles who spread the Gospel and cared for the poor, the sick, and the outcast.
As I become more familiar with the Archdiocese of Detroit, my new home, I am struck by the many ways you and so many others have contributed to these vibrant ministries in the past. God has blessed each of us with unique talents, resources, and opportunities. These gifts are not meant to be kept for ourselves but shared with others, particularly those in greatest need.
Please prayerfully consider renewing your support this year for the many ministries that serve as our collective answer to Jesus’s call to “feed my sheep.”
Entrusting you to the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Blessed Solanus Casey, and St. Anne, our patroness, I remain,
Sincerely yours in Christ,
The Most Reverend Edward J. Weisenburger
Archbishop of Detroit
