Blessing of the Home

The Holy Family welcomed the Magi on Epiphany. A beautiful tradition inspired by this event is the New Year’s blessing of the home. On the Feast of Epiphany, Father will bless chalk. Use the chalk and the following prayers to bless your home.

All: Make the sign of the cross.
Head of Household: “Peace be to this house and to all who dwell here, in the name of the Lord.”
All: Blessed be God forever.
Reader: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things come to be through Him, and without Him, nothing came to be.... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

Use the blessed chalk to write above the entrance door(s) of your house: (a different member could write each letter or number of the household)

20+C+M+B+26

Meaning of the above: 20 and 23 represent the year. C, M, B can represent the three magi Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar, or Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Latin for “May Christ Bless this House”). All: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ that our concern for others may reflect you love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Prayer For Blessing Of Homes With The Blessing of The Three Kings

Visit our home, O Lord.
Chase far away any evil or enemy.
Send your messengers to be with us
And keep us in your peace.
May all who come to our home be treated with respect and kindness,
As were Casper, Melchior, and Baltasar
When they came to visit Your Son, Jesus.
May all our comings and goings be with Your loving care.
Bless all the rooms of our home.
May each of them be holy and filled with the spirit of happiness.
May we truly live in our home as persons of peace,
Being prayerful and playful with one another. Amen
